Also higher lying so its warm in summer and cold in winter, though our concept of cold is probably the height of your summer. It rarely snows here, only twice in my life have I seen snow, only in mountainous regions does it regularly snow. I do not like cold, the two or three months we have winter, I’m absolutely depressed and miserable. Tourists from Europe often wear short clothes and find it ‘fresh’. Christmas is in summer. We don’t sit in, we go out in the sun. We don’t drink hot chocolate, we drink beer and cold drinks. We don’t eat turkey and mince pie, we have a barbeque over a fire. We don’t cosy around a fire, we jump into the closest body of water! ;-D On to the Karroo. The Karroo is a semi desert, very dry and only scrub for vegetation, also flat and windy. Then there’s the mountains of the Drakensburg and Lesotho. Here it is alpine in climate, snowy an cold, can get cold in summer too. Snow on the very high tops of the range. Then, the South coast is also very green but it is slightly cooler in the winter, with rain throughout the year. The Cape is next, here it matches the Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters, very scenic. In fact a lot of S.A is scenic. There are a lot of wilderness areas in S.A. and hopefully it will stay that way. But as growth in industry and trade increases, we will see many of these areas gone in the next fifty or so years. I think the record is for a place called Sutherland. This place is in the mountainous regions in the north west of the country, I think it was -15 celcius. In Pretoria, not even 100km from us, its always 2-4 degrees Celcius warmer than here, especially in winter as it lies lower than Krugersdorp or Johannesburg. We also have the most white people and asian people than the rest of Africa. I grew up in the age of apartheid. We suffered discrimination like back folks did in the US, but here it was instituted by the government, the church and the white people. But apartheid i over and we must live our lives. Its been 14 years since S.A became a democratic republic. I’ve read quite a bit about Alaska, I’ve seen much on Discovery and National Geographic. I bet the air is clean and fresh and the winters cold. I could never even imagine staying where you are. I’ll take the bush and the heat and all the animals over having to stay in London, let alone Alaska. Still it is one of the few last wild places on earth and I’d love to visit in the summer. We speak English, but with a S.A twang. Not unlike Carlize Theron when she was interviewed in her early days in Hollywood. Now she sounds like a yank ;-D. But regionally the accents change and slangs are mutually unintelligible. I also speak Afrikaans, IsiZulu and Setswana. We have 11 official languages, owing to the diversity of people living here. Anyways I think that is todays lesson. take care my friend, and all the best. Tell me about your place please? Cheers! Stokes |
