That's a very nice set up, welcome to the site and to reef keeping. One of the things I've learned in 7 yrs of marine aquarium keeping is to leave the tank alone when trouble starts. Trouble as of stuff growing everywhere. Keep up with H20 changes, add a cleaning crew and nature will take care of things. No need to add chemicals to take care of stuff. If you plan on corals then of course you'll need calcium, magnesium etc. I'm sure your brother has excellent advice for you and by the look of your pic you've got a good start. Great job!!
