New Years Greetings!
Hi Rochelle, indeed a pleasure to b in touch with someone from Missouri! Seasons Greetings! Ive been rather slack with the Christmas greetings. South Africa is a lovely place, there are first world standards and third world standards, while we have great cities there are many wide open spaces, like where I live, it is a small town in the classic savanna landscape, there is a river which pans out into a swamp. I have two reserves not very far from me where one can view all forms of antelope, lions, giraffes, monkeys and baboons, leopard, zebra, wildebeest and warthog. There is mostly grass punctuated by trees in my area. We have much cattle and other livestock but we not have many wild beasts outside reserves like most other African countries. South Africa is different in that ee have many different cultures and people's that make up the demographics. We have the most people from a European background. Lots of Indians too, Gandhi actually served here in the South African war known as the Anglo Boer war. The indigenous people are tribal the Zulu people being the majority, followed by their rivals and neighbours the Xhosa. There are also Tswana, Tsonga, Venda and Sotho people that are Bantu. Then there are people of mixed racial background like me. And we also have San Bushmen who have taken up farming instead of hunting. Since apartheid ended, we coloureds have had it a lot better and we are happy to be truly free. Yet there are many challenges like HIV which is an epidemic here. Crime is high we have some of the worst statistics in the world. It is summer and its hot and humid. It rains a lot but it clears up and then the heat makes it sticky. Our traditional Christmas fare would be maize meal porridge, fire grilled meat and beer. In white households its cured ham, roast beef or duck if at home, otherwise Christmas is often spent on the beach or in the Bush. I like both but this year we went fishing on the Crocodile river. It's in the held, where I love spending time. I also enjoy spending time on safari. I've been to a few national parks been on horseback and foot. It's a lot different than in a jeep. I also love animals and wish I could have more. The snake is big around 8 ft.I have said much. Happy New Year! Cheers! Stokes
