Hello!
Adding salt to a freshwater aquarium has some perks, but isn't beneficial to all inhabitants. It does help keep Ich under control, stimulates the slime coating, etc. But cory's don't like it. Algae wafers don't grow algae any more or less than any food will, lots of light and having excess food convert into waste is the best algae fertilizer. Not sure why your otos and corys disappear. Have you had your water tested? do you do your own testing? I do mine about once a month unless something seems amiss. I know high ammonia is hard on the corys, also will help keep algae growing nicely, so perhaps more water changes? Not sure what else to offer there, besides my empathy!
